We get asked this constantly, and the usual framing is wrong. People ask whether an insulated door will keep the garage warm. Unless you heat the garage, it will not, and that is not why it matters.
The real reason is the shared wall
If your garage is attached, it shares at least one wall and usually a ceiling with heated rooms. In an Upstate New York January, an uninsulated garage sits near outdoor temperature. That means the rooms next to it are losing heat into a cold box all winter.
An insulated door does not warm the garage so much as it stops the garage becoming a heat sink pressed against your house. Rooms above or beside the garage are noticeably less cold as a result.
What R-value actually means here
Doors are rated by R-value. Higher is better insulation.
- R-6 to R-9. Single layer of polystyrene. Better than nothing. Reasonable for a detached garage.
- R-12 to R-16. Polyurethane injected between steel skins. This is the range that makes sense for most attached garages here.
- R-18 and above. Worth it if you use the garage as a workshop or if there is a bedroom directly above it.
Three benefits people do not expect
- The door is quieter. An insulated door has far less drumming and rattle, which matters at 6am with a bedroom above the garage.
- The door is stronger. A polyurethane-filled section is considerably more rigid than a hollow steel one. It resists denting from a bumper or a hockey puck.
- It handles wind better. In Buffalo especially, a rigid door flexes less against constant pressure, which means less wear on the rollers and track.
When it is not worth it
A detached, unheated garage that stores a lawnmower does not need R-16. Save the money and put it toward higher-cycle springs instead, which will matter more over ten years.
One thing that is always worth it
Whatever door you choose, the seals matter as much as the panel. A well insulated door with a gap along the bottom is worse than a basic door that seals properly. Ask about the bottom seal, the side weatherstripping and the top seal separately.
